Why Death Marches Started

Near the end of World War Two, the Germans were losing the war and the Red Army, or Russian Army, was reclaiming territory as they pushed the Germans back.  As the Russians were heading to Poland, the Germans started to evacuate the concentration camps burning them down to hide their crimes.  The prisoners were taken on long marches otherwise known as, Death Marches hundreds of miles away.  The prisoners were given little or no food.  Those who lagged behind were shot.  Most people that went on this long journey died.

Ways people died on Death Marches

Most of the Death Marches took place in the winter so many people died from hypothermia.  Some people were already very sick or wounded so they very shot when they lagged   behind.  Lots of people died from hunger because the prisoners were hardly ever given food.  Put the food was no good it was usually muddy water and rotten or black bread.  Prisoners were also killed when Nazi's murdered them.  There was no shelter on the way so no matter if it was raining or snowing you would have to march through bad whether conditions.  Not many people lived though these Death Marches.
